Why is Cefixime Used?

Cefixime is used to treat wide variety of Bacterial infections in all age groups. It belongs to a group of antibiotics called cephalosporins. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.

PHARMACOLOGY

Gastrointestinal absorption is incomplete (about 40 to 50% is absorbed). The oral suspension is more rapidly and completely absorbed than the tablets. The elimination half-life is about 3 h . The drug is not appreciably metabolised, and 25 to 50% of the dose is excreted in the urine within 24 h. The recommended dosage for children is 8 mg/kg/day orally, once daily or in two divided doses.

ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY

Cefixime has good activity against group A and group B streptococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae. However, viridans streptococci and groups C, F and G streptococci are only moderately susceptible, while Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase-negative staphylococci, enterococci and Listeria monocytogenes are resistant.

Cefixime has excellent activity against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Haemophilus influenzae (including beta-lactamase producing strains of these bacteria), and against Gram-negative bacilli such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, as well as Salmonella and Shigella species. However, it has poor activity against Pseudomonas and Serratia species, Enterobacter cloacae and Citrobacter freundii.

Cefixime is not effective against anaerobes.

SIDE EFFECTS

The adverse effects of cefixime are generally mild and transient. In controlled trials comparing cefixime with amoxicillin, the most notable effect was diarrhea, occurring in about 15% of children on cefixime and about 8% on amoxicillin. Diarrhea was usually mild, developed within four days of treatment and resolved on discontinuation of cefixime. Severe diarrhea and/or pseudomembranous colitis were reported in fewer than 2% of patients. Drug hypersensitivity reactions also occurred rarely.

In order to stop these side effects now cefixime with lactobacillus is available in the market in both tablet and dry syrup forms.
