Mechanism of Action
Tamsulosin is a uroselective alpha-1A adrenergic antagonist — relaxes prostatic smooth muscle relieving urinary obstruction in BPH. Higher selectivity for prostatic alpha-1A than vascular alpha-1B = less hypotension than older alpha-blockers.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 0.4 mg once daily after same meal.
Side Effects
Retrograde ejaculation, orthostatic hypotension (less than terazosin/doxazosin), dizziness, rhinitis, intraoperative floppy iris syndrome.
Contraindications & Precautions
Severe hepatic impairment, history of orthostatic hypotension.
