Mechanism of Action
Flurbiprofen is a phenylalkanoic-acid NSAID that inhibits cyclooxygenase, reducing prostaglandin synthesis in ocular tissues. Topical instillation pre-operatively blocks the surgical-trauma-induced miosis (prostaglandin-mediated) and post-operatively reduces inflammation, pain and risk of cystoid macular oedema.
Dosage & Administration
- Cataract surgery: 1 drop every 30 minutes, 4 times in the 2 hours before surgery
- Post-operative: 1 drop 4 times daily for 1–3 weeks
- Apply pressure to the inner canthus to reduce systemic absorption
- Use under ophthalmologist supervision

- Transient stinging on instillation
- Mild conjunctival redness
- Punctate keratitis with prolonged use
- Increased bleeding tendency intra-operatively
