Mechanism of Action
Rifaximin is a non-absorbable broad-spectrum antibiotic — derivative of rifamycin that stays in the gut lumen with <0.4% systemic absorption. Active against gram-positive, gram-negative, aerobic, and anaerobic bacteria. Used for traveller's diarrhoea (E. coli), hepatic encephalopathy maintenance, IBS-D, and SIBO.
Dosage & Administration
- Hepatic encephalopathy: 550 mg twice daily.
- IBS-D: 550 mg three times daily for 14 days.
Side Effects
- GI upset, headache, abdominal pain.
- Generally very well tolerated due to minimal systemic absorption.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to rifamycins, intestinal obstruction.
