About Caberfix-0.5 Tablet
Caberfix-0.5 Tablet contains Cabergoline 0.5 mg, a selective long-acting D2 dopamine agonist used for the treatment of hyperprolactinaemia, prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas (prolactinomas) and lactation suppression. Its long half-life (~65 hours) allows once or twice weekly dosing — a major adherence advantage over earlier dopamine agonists like Bromocriptine which require daily dosing.
By stimulating pituitary D2 receptors, Cabergoline inhibits prolactin secretion from lactotrophs, normalising serum prolactin levels and (in prolactinoma) shrinking tumour mass. It restores normal menstrual cycles in hyperprolactinaemic infertility, reduces galactorrhoea, and stops physiological lactation when used post-partum for medically indicated suppression.
Caberfix-0.5 is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing — a specialty gynaecology/endocrinology SKU.
Indications
- Hyperprolactinaemia (idiopathic or drug-induced)
- Prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas (prolactinoma)
- Hyperprolactinaemia-associated infertility and amenorrhoea
- Galactorrhoea
- Lactation suppression (medically indicated, post-partum)
- Adjunct in some Parkinson's protocols (specialist use)
Mechanism of Action
Cabergoline is a long-acting ergot-derived D2 dopamine receptor agonist with high affinity for pituitary lactotroph D2 receptors. Agonist binding inhibits adenylate cyclase, lowers intracellular cAMP and suppresses prolactin gene transcription and secretion. The long half-life results in sustained prolactin suppression with weekly dosing.
Dosage & Administration
Hyperprolactinaemia: 0.25 mg twice weekly initially, titrated based on serum prolactin to 0.5–1 mg weekly. Prolactinoma: up to 4.5 mg weekly. Lactation suppression: single 1 mg dose within 24 hours of delivery. To be prescribed by an endocrinologist or gynaecologist.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, postural hypotension, abdominal pain, fatigue. With long-term high-dose use (Parkinson's): cardiac valve regurgitation, retroperitoneal/pleural fibrosis (rare in gynaecological doses).
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to ergot alkaloids. Uncontrolled hypertension. History of cardiac valvulopathy or fibrotic disorders. Pregnancy-induced hypertension and pre-eclampsia. Severe hepatic impairment. Concurrent dopamine antagonists (antipsychotics, metoclopramide).
Storage
Store below 25 °C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.
