About Cefiza-CV Dry Syrup
Cefiza-CV Dry Syrup is the paediatric formulation of Cefixime with Clavulanic Acid (50 mg + 31.25 mg per 5 ml), used for children with bacterial infections caused by beta-lactamase-producing organisms or where prior antibiotic exposure makes resistance likely.
The combination extends Cefixime’s spectrum against resistant H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, E. coli and selected anaerobes — particularly relevant in paediatric otitis media, sinusitis and recurrent infections.
Cefiza-CV Dry Syrup is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing.
Indications
- Acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis (streptococcal)
- Acute otitis media
- Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
- Uncomplicated UTI and cystitis
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (single dose)
- Typhoid fever (uncomplicated)
- Paediatric beta-lactamase-producing infections
- Recurrent paediatric ENT infections
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime binds penicillin-binding proteins (PBP-3) on gram-negative bacteria, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. The result is bacterial cell wall destabilisation and osmotic lysis. Cefixime is resistant to many beta-lactamases produced by gram-negative organisms — distinguishing it from earlier cephalosporins. Clavulanate inhibits bacterial beta-lactamases, restoring cefixime activity against resistant organisms.
Dosage & Administration
Children: 8–10 mg/kg/day of cefixime in one or two divided doses for 5–7 days. Reconstitute with supplied water and shake well.
Side Effects
GI upset, diarrhoea (more common with clavulanate). Other side effects similar to plain cefixime.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Severe penicillin allergy (cross-reactivity ~10%). Renal impairment requires dose adjustment. History of GI disease (caution). History of cholestatic jaundice with clavulanate.
Storage
Dry powder below 30 °C. After reconstitution, refrigerate and use within 7 days.
