About Cefiza-CV Tablet
Cefiza-CV Tablet combines Cefixime 200 mg with Clavulanic Acid 125 mg. The addition of clavulanate — a beta-lactamase inhibitor — extends Cefixime’s spectrum to include beta-lactamase-producing strains of H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, E. coli and many anaerobes that would otherwise inactivate cefixime.
This combination is particularly valuable in complicated UTI, ENT infections in regions with high beta-lactamase prevalence, and infections suspected to involve mixed flora. It is widely used as a step-up from plain cefixime when initial response is suboptimal.
Cefiza-CV is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing — a high-value antibiotic SKU.
Indications
- Acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis (streptococcal)
- Acute otitis media
- Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
- Uncomplicated UTI and cystitis
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (single dose)
- Typhoid fever (uncomplicated)
- Beta-lactamase-producing bacterial infections
- Recurrent UTI with prior antibiotic exposure
- Complicated otitis media and sinusitis
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime binds penicillin-binding proteins (PBP-3) on gram-negative bacteria, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. The result is bacterial cell wall destabilisation and osmotic lysis. Cefixime is resistant to many beta-lactamases produced by gram-negative organisms — distinguishing it from earlier cephalosporins. Clavulanic acid is a suicide-substrate inhibitor of beta-lactamases — it binds and inactivates the enzymes that bacteria use to destroy beta-lactam antibiotics, restoring cefixime's spectrum against resistant strains.

Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Severe penicillin allergy (cross-reactivity ~10%). Renal impairment requires dose adjustment. History of GI disease (caution). History of cholestatic jaundice with clavulanate.
