PCD meaning in pharma, in one picture

Who What they do What they earn
Pharma company (e.g. Trumac Healthcare) Develops the brands, gets them made at WHO-GMP units, prints visual aids, supplies at net rates, gives monopoly for the area Net rate × volume

Stockist / chemist Stocks and dispenses against prescriptions Standard trade margins (10% / 20%)
Doctor Prescribes the brand on merit and familiarity –

How the PCD franchise model works

  1. The partner chooses a company, a division and an area, and the company confirms the area is free (monopoly).
  2. The partner shares the drug licence and GST, receives the price list with net rates and selects 25–40 products for the doctors they know.
  3. The first order (₹25,000 minimum at Trumac) is paid in advance and dispatched the same day with promotional material.
  4. The partner visits doctors with visual aids, places stock with stockists and chemists, and services prescriptions.
  5. Repeat orders follow the prescriptions; the partner adds products and divisions as the area grows.

The economics are explained with a worked example in the PCD franchise cost guide, and the margins at each level in the PTR PTS calculator.

Why the model exists

No company can keep medical representatives in every town. The PCD model grew in India as a way for companies to reach doctors through local partners who already knew them, and for experienced MRs, distributors and chemists to run their own business on established products without the cost of manufacturing or brand registration. Today it is the main route by which small and mid-sized Indian companies reach the market, with Chandigarh Tricity (Chandigarh–Panchkula–Mohali), Baddi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai as its biggest hubs.

Who takes a PCD pharma franchise

  • Medical representatives and area managers – the largest group; see PCD franchise for MRs
  • Pharma distributors and stockists adding their own promoted brands
  • Chemists who want prescription brands of their own
  • Pharmacy and science graduates starting a business, often with a family member’s drug licence
  • Doctors’ relatives and hospital-supply firms in smaller towns

What a PCD partner needs

  • A wholesale drug licence (Forms 20B/21B) – see the drug licence guide
  • GST registration (or Aadhaar for the e-way bill at the start)
  • Working capital – from ₹25,000 for the first order; see low-investment PCD franchise
  • Relationships with, or the willingness to call on, doctors and chemists in the area

Frequently asked questions

What is the full form of PCD in pharma?

PCD stands for Propaganda Cum Distribution: the partner promotes (propaganda) a company’s brands to doctors and distributes them in an area.

What does PCD pharma franchise mean?

An arrangement in which a pharma company supplies its branded medicines at net rates, with promotional material and usually monopoly rights for an area, to a partner who promotes and distributes them and keeps the margin.

Is PCD the same as pharma franchise?

In practice yes. ‘Pharma franchise’, ‘PCD franchise’ and ‘PCD pharma franchise’ all describe the same model; ‘PCD’ is the older trade term.

How is PCD different from a distributorship?

A distributor supplies what the company’s own representatives generate, at a fixed small margin and usually without monopoly. A PCD partner does the promotion themselves, buys at net rates and holds monopoly for the area, so the margin is much larger.

What is needed to start a PCD pharma franchise?

A wholesale drug licence, GST (or Aadhaar initially), a minimum first order – ₹25,000 at Trumac Healthcare – and doctors and chemists you can call on.

Is PCD pharma profitable?

It depends on the doctors you cover and the products you choose. Because the partner buys at net rates well below PTS, margins per unit are high; the running costs are promotion, travel and working capital.
