About Cefalact-125 Dry Syrup
Cefalact-125 Dry Syrup contains Cephalexin 125 mg per 5 ml when reconstituted, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic widely used in paediatric practice. Mechanism of Action
Cephalexin binds penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on bacterial cell walls, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. The resulting weakened cell wall causes osmotic lysis of actively dividing organisms. As a first-generation cephalosporin, activity is best against gram-positive organisms.
Dosage & Administration
Children: 25–50 mg/kg/day in four divided doses. Pharmacist or carer reconstitutes by adding the supplied water to the dry powder up to the marked line, then shake well. Refrigerate after reconstitution.
Side Effects
GI upset, diarrhoea, nausea, mild rash. Rare: pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions. Cross-reactivity with penicillin allergy (~10% risk).
