About Cefalact-125 Dry Syrup

Cefalact-125 Dry Syrup contains Cephalexin 125 mg per 5 ml when reconstituted, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic widely used in paediatric practice. The dry-syrup format ensures stability of the active ingredient until reconstitution at the point of dispensing, after which it remains stable for 7 days under refrigeration.

Cephalexin provides reliable coverage against gram-positive bacteria (streptococci, methicillin-sensitive staphylococci) and selected gram-negatives, making it particularly useful for paediatric skin infections, otitis media, mild UTI and post-tonsillectomy prophylaxis. Its excellent oral bioavailability and palatable formulation make it a paediatric-favourite cephalosporin.

Cefalact-125 is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing — a high-volume paediatric SKU.

Indications

  • Paediatric skin and soft-tissue infections
  • Streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis
  • Otitis media
  • Uncomplicated UTI in children
  • Pre- and post-surgical prophylaxis

Mechanism of Action

Cephalexin binds penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on bacterial cell walls, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. The resulting weakened cell wall causes osmotic lysis of actively dividing organisms. As a first-generation cephalosporin, activity is best against gram-positive organisms.

Dosage & Administration

Children: 25–50 mg/kg/day in four divided doses. Pharmacist or carer reconstitutes by adding the supplied water to the dry powder up to the marked line, then shake well. Refrigerate after reconstitution.

Side Effects

GI upset, diarrhoea, nausea, mild rash. Rare: pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions. Cross-reactivity with penicillin allergy (~10% risk).

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Severe penicillin allergy (caution). Renal impairment (dose adjustment).

Storage

Store the dry powder below 30 °C. After reconstitution, refrigerate and use within 7 days.
