PCD Pharma Franchise vs Distributorship vs Ethical Pharma Franchise: Which Is Better?

Three ways to be in the pharma trade – compared on margin, investment, area rights and risk

People use PCD pharma franchise, ethical pharma franchise and distributorship loosely, but the three are different businesses with different margins and different risks. This guide puts them side by side so you can choose the right model before you invest.

The three models in one table

PCD pharma franchise Ethical / branded company distribution Generic distributorship
Who promotes to doctors You (the partner), with company material Company’s own medical representatives Nobody – you supply against demand created by others
Area rights Monopoly for your area None – company appoints many Usually none; several stockists per city
Purchase price Net rate (well below MRP) Fixed trade margin (typically 8–10% for stockists) Fixed trade margin
Your margin Large – you set your selling price up to MRP Small, fixed Small, fixed
Investment to start Low – from ₹25,000 at Trumac High – company decides stock and security Medium – security deposit and stock
Brand ownership Company’s brands; you build them in your area Company’s brands Company’s brands
Best for MRs, distributors and first-time entrepreneurs who can promote Established C&F agents and super-stockists Chemists and wholesalers with existing demand

PCD pharma franchise

PCD means propaganda-cum-distribution. The company gives you its products at net rates and monopoly rights for your area; you promote the brands to doctors and chemists, appoint stockists and keep the margin between the net rate and your selling price. Trumac Healthcare has worked this way since 2007 with more than 4000 partners – see how our PCD franchise works and the cost guide.

Ethical (branded) company distribution

Large branded companies keep their own medical representatives. A distributor or stockist only supplies what the MRs generate, at a fixed margin, usually alongside several other distributors in the same city. Investment and credit exposure are high and the margin is thin, but demand is created for you.

Generic distributorship

Generic wholesalers supply low-priced generics to chemists and hospitals without doctor promotion. Volumes can be large, but there is no monopoly, prices are driven down by competition and there is no brand loyalty.

Third-party manufacturing is a different business

Under third-party (contract) manufacturing you own the brand and the marketing and only outsource production – it needs your own brand registrations, carton designs, minimum batch quantities and a marketing team. A PCD franchise lets you start with 25–30 products and no batch-size commitments; many partners move to their own brands only after they have built a market.

Which model should you choose?

  • You are an MR, area manager or distributor who can visit doctors: PCD franchise
  • You already run a large wholesale business with credit lines to many chemists: ethical distribution adds volume at low margin
  • You supply hospitals and institutions on tenders: generic distributorship
  • You have a marketing team and want your own brand: third-party manufacturing, usually after a successful PCD run

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between PCD franchise and distributorship?

In a PCD franchise you promote the company’s brands to doctors yourself, buy at net rates and hold monopoly rights for your area, so your margin is large. A distributor supplies what the company’s own representatives generate, at a fixed small margin, usually without any area rights.

What is an ethical pharma franchise?

Distribution of a branded (ethical) company’s products that are promoted by the company’s own medical representatives. The distributor earns a fixed trade margin and usually shares the city with other distributors.

Which is more profitable – PCD or distributorship?

Per unit, PCD is far more profitable because you buy at net rate and sell up to MRP. Distributorship earns less per unit but needs no doctor promotion and can run on volume.

Can an MR take a PCD pharma franchise?

Yes – medical representatives and area managers are the most common PCD partners, because they already know the doctors and chemists in their area. The drug licence can be held by the partner or a family member’s firm.

How much does a PCD franchise cost compared with a distributorship?

A PCD franchise with Trumac Healthcare starts from a ₹25,000 first order with no fee or deposit. Branded-company distributorships typically need a security deposit and much larger opening stock.
