Mechanism of Action
Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum acylureido penicillin with activity against Pseudomonas, gram-negative aerobes, and many anaerobes. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor extending coverage against beta-lactamase-producing strains. Standard empiric therapy in severe hospital infections.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 4.5 g IV every 6 hours (extended infusion over 4 hours preferred for severe infections).
Side Effects
GI upset, diarrhoea, rash, hypersensitivity, electrolyte disturbances (high Na load), bleeding (high dose).
