Mechanism of Action
Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA) is a hydrophilic bile acid that competitively displaces toxic hydrophobic bile acids from enterohepatic circulation — protects hepatocytes, improves bile flow, and dissolves cholesterol gallstones. First-line for primary biliary cholangitis.
Dosage & Administration
Children: 10–15 mg/kg/day in 2–3 divided doses.
Side Effects
Diarrhoea, nausea, hair thinning (long-term), GI upset.
Contraindications & Precautions
Acute cholecystitis, biliary obstruction, severe hepatic disease (advanced PBC), pigment gallstones, calcified gallstones.
