Mechanism of Action
Fluticasone Propionate is a synthetic trifluorinated glucocorticoid with potent topical anti-inflammatory activity. It binds intracellular glucocorticoid receptors and induces synthesis of lipocortin-1, suppressing phospholipase A2 and the arachidonic-acid inflammatory cascade. Nasal application provides high local concentrations with negligible systemic absorption.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults and adolescents > 12: 2 sprays in each nostril once daily (morning)
- Maintenance: 1 spray each nostril once daily once symptoms controlled
- Prime the pump before first use
- Allow 1–2 weeks for full effect
Side Effects
- Nasal dryness or burning
- Mild epistaxis
- Nasal mucosal ulceration with prolonged use
- Headache
- Septal perforation (very rare)
Contraindications
- Untreated nasal infection
- Recent nasal surgery or trauma
