Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic (azalide subclass) — binds 50S ribosome inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Long tissue half-life allowing 3-day courses. Active against atypicals (Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, Legionella), gram-positives, H. influenzae.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 500 mg IV once daily, switch to oral when tolerated.
Side Effects
GI upset, diarrhoea, hepatotoxicity (rare), QT prolongation, C. difficile colitis. Injection site reactions.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to macrolides, severe hepatic disease, prolonged QT.
