About Citicam Injection
Citicam Injection contains Citicoline (CDP-choline) Sodium 250 mg per 2 ml — a phospholipid precursor used in acute ischaemic stroke, traumatic brain injury and cognitive impairment. Citicoline supports membrane phospholipid synthesis (phosphatidylcholine), neurotransmitter production (acetylcholine, dopamine, noradrenaline) and reduces glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity in injured brain tissue.
Citicoline has been studied extensively in stroke (the ICTUS trial showed modest benefit on neurological recovery), with broader use accepted in TBI recovery and age-related cognitive decline. Parenteral form is used in acute settings (first 1–3 weeks); oral form for maintenance.
Citicam Injection is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP injectable conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise, government tenders and third-party manufacturing.
Indications
- Acute ischaemic stroke
- Traumatic brain injury (acute and recovery phase)
- Post-stroke cognitive rehabilitation
- Vascular dementia
- Glaucomatous optic neuropathy (off-label)
Mechanism of Action
Citicoline is hydrolysed to choline and cytidine, which cross the blood-brain barrier and re-form CDP-choline intracellularly. CDP-choline is the rate-limiting substrate for phosphatidylcholine synthesis, supporting cell membrane integrity. Citicoline also enhances acetylcholine synthesis, reduces glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity, and supports mitochondrial function in injured neurons.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 250–1000 mg IV/IM daily for 10–14 days in acute stroke. Adjust based on clinical response. Strictly medical supervision.
Side Effects
Generally very well tolerated. Possible transient hypotension, mild GI upset, headache. Rare hypersensitivity.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Severe vagotonia (hypertensive crisis). Pregnancy and lactation (limited data).
Storage
Store below 25 °C in a dry place, protected from light. Do not freeze.
