About Colistic Dry Syrup
Colistic Dry Syrup contains Colistin Sulphate 12.5 mg per 5 ml — an oral polymyxin antibiotic for selective decontamination of gram-negative gut flora. Used in paediatric infectious diarrhoea caused by sensitive gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, selected Pseudomonas) where systemic antibiotic absorption is not desired.
Oral Colistin is poorly absorbed from the GI tract, giving it the advantage of high gut-luminal concentrations with minimal systemic effects. Particularly useful in selected paediatric diarrhoea where local gut antibacterial action is preferred.

Mechanism of Action
Colistin (polymyxin E) binds to lipopolysaccharide and phospholipids in gram-negative bacterial outer membrane, disrupting membrane integrity and causing bacterial death. Specifically active against gram-negative organisms; minimal absorption from gut.
Dosage & Administration
Children: 6 mg/kg/day in three divided doses for 5–7 days. Reconstitute with supplied water; refrigerate after reconstitution.
Side Effects
Generally well tolerated due to minimal systemic absorption. Possible mild GI upset.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Myasthenia gravis (rare risk from any absorbed colistin).
