Mechanism of Action
Escitalopram is the active S-enantiomer of citalopram — most selective SSRI antidepressant. Selectively inhibits presynaptic serotonin reuptake (SERT) with high affinity. Less drug interactions, lower QT risk than racemic citalopram at standard doses.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 20 mg once daily (FDA max).

Nausea, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, sweating, somnolence. QT prolongation at high doses (FDA dose cap 20 mg). QT prolongation at 20 mg dose — monitor in cardiac patients.

MAO inhibitor use (within 14 days), pimozide, congenital long QT, severe hepatic impairment.
