Mechanism of Action
Rifaximin is a non-absorbable broad-spectrum antibiotic — derivative of rifamycin that stays in the gut lumen with <0.4% systemic absorption. Active against gram-positive, gram-negative, aerobic, and anaerobic bacteria. Used for traveller's diarrhoea (E. coli), hepatic encephalopathy maintenance, IBS-D, and SIBO.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 200 mg three times daily for 3 days (traveller's diarrhoea); 550 mg twice daily (SIBO/HE).
Side Effects
GI upset, headache, abdominal pain. Generally very well tolerated due to minimal systemic absorption.

Hypersensitivity to rifamycins, intestinal obstruction.
