About Cefom-S 1.5g Injection
Cefom-S 1.5g Injection contains Cefoperazone 1000 mg with Sulbactam 500 mg, the standard 2:1 ratio injectable combination widely used in Indian hospital practice for serious gram-negative infections — particularly those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter and beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae.
Cefoperazone is one of the few third-generation cephalosporins with intrinsic anti-pseudomonal activity. Sulbactam adds beta-lactamase inhibition plus its own intrinsic activity against Acinetobacter — making this combination particularly valuable in hospital-acquired infections, ICU-related sepsis and complicated intra-abdominal infections.
Cefom-S 1.5g is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP injectable conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise, government tenders and third-party manufacturing — a hospital staple SKU.
Indications
- Hospital-acquired infections including pneumonia
- Septicaemia and bacteraemia
- Complicated intra-abdominal and pelvic infections
- Complicated UTI
- Skin and soft-tissue infections caused by gram-negative or mixed flora
- Surgical prophylaxis (high-risk procedures)
Mechanism of Action
Cefoperazone is a third-generation cephalosporin with strong gram-negative coverage including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It binds penicillin-binding proteins to inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis. Sulbactam (or tazobactam in combinations) is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that extends the spectrum to beta-lactamase-producing strains.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 1.5–3 g every 12 hours by IV infusion or IM injection. Severe infections: up to 12 g/day in divided doses. Adjust dose in hepatic/renal impairment. Strictly hospital use.
Side Effects
Injection site pain, phlebitis, diarrhoea, mild rash. Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol (Cefoperazone N-methylthiotetrazole side chain). Rare: hypoprothrombinaemia, hypersensitivity, pseudomembranous colitis.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Severe penicillin allergy. Concurrent alcohol use. Severe hepatic impairment (cefoperazone is biliary-excreted).
Storage
Store below 25 °C in a dry place, protected from light. Use within 24 hours after reconstitution.
