Mechanism of Action
ORS exploits the sodium-glucose coupled transport in the intestinal brush border: glucose facilitates Na+ absorption via SGLT1, water follows osmotically. The reduced osmolarity formula (245 mOsm/L) avoids the osmotic diarrhoea seen with older hypertonic preparations.
Dosage & Administration
- Dissolve 1 sachet in 1 litre of clean drinking water
- Adults: drink 200–400 ml after each loose stool
- Children (under 2 years): 50–100 ml after each loose stool
- Discard reconstituted solution after 24 hours
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated
- Hypernatraemia if prepared with insufficient water
- Mild nausea occasionally

- Intestinal obstruction
- Paralytic ileus
