Mechanism of Action
Levocetirizine is the active R-enantiomer of cetirizine — a selective second-generation H1 antihistamine. Higher H1 receptor affinity than cetirizine with lower brain penetration — minimal sedation. Onset 30 minutes, duration 24 hours.
Dosage & Administration
- Children 2–6 years: 1.25 mg (2.5 ml) twice daily.
- Children 6–12 years: 2.5 mg (5 ml) twice daily.
Side Effects
- Mild somnolence, dry mouth, headache.
- Generally well tolerated.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity, severe renal impairment (CrCl <10 ml/min), end-stage renal disease.
