Mechanism of Action
Moxonidine selectively binds imidazoline I1 receptors in the rostral ventrolateral medulla, reducing central sympathetic outflow. The I1 selectivity gives it fewer side effects than older clonidine-class agents (less sedation, dry mouth, rebound hypertension). It also has favourable effects on insulin sensitivity.
Dosage & Administration
- Initial: 0.2 mg once daily
- Maintenance: 0.2–0.6 mg/day in 1–2 divided doses
- Maximum 0.6 mg/day
