Mechanism of Action
Both Lidocaine and Prilocaine are amide local anaesthetics that reversibly block voltage-gated sodium channels on nerve membranes, preventing depolarisation and the propagation of pain signals. The eutectic 1:1 mixture lowers the melting point and increases penetration through intact skin compared to either drug alone.
Dosage & Administration
- Apply a thick layer (1–2 g per 10 cm²) under occlusive dressing
- Leave for 60 minutes before procedure (90 min for genital skin)
- Maximum dose 2 g per 10 cm² for up to 5 hours
- Wipe off before the procedure
Side Effects
- Local skin pallor or redness
- Mild burning sensation
- Allergic contact dermatitis (rare)
- Methaemoglobinaemia in infants (high doses)
Contraindications
- Congenital methaemoglobinaemia
- Infants under 3 months
- Hypersensitivity to amide local anaesthetics
- Open wounds or mucous membranes (use carefully)
