About Erdoflow-300 Capsule
Erdoflow-300 Capsule is a mono-therapy Erdosteine 300 mg formulation — a thiol-based mucolytic and antioxidant indicated for acute and chronic bronchopulmonary disorders associated with thick, viscid and difficult-to-expectorate mucus. Mechanism of Action
Erdosteine is an orally-active pro-drug that is metabolised in the liver to its active thiol metabolite (Met-1, M1). Met-1 contains two free sulphydryl (–SH) groups that break the disulphide bridges (–S–S–) holding mucus glycoproteins together, reducing sputum viscosity and elasticity and improving mucociliary transport of secretions out of the airways. Beyond mucolysis, Met-1 has significant antioxidant activity — it scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by activated neutrophils and inhaled irritants (cigarette smoke, pollutants), and it inhibits the oxidative inactivation of alpha-1-antitrypsin, thereby protecting lung elastin from proteolytic damage. Erdosteine also enhances the penetration of concomitantly administered antibiotics into bronchial secretions, and clinical trials (including the RESTORE study) have demonstrated a reduction in the frequency and duration of COPD exacerbations, hospitalisations and antibiotic use. Erdosteine has a favourable safety profile because the free thiol groups are 'masked' until hepatic activation, minimising the direct gastric irritation associated with older thiol mucolytics.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 1 capsule (300 mg) twice daily (morning and evening) after meals, or as directed by the treating physician. Duration is typically 5–10 days for acute exacerbations; for chronic maintenance in COPD, a longer 6–12 month course may be considered per pulmonologist advice. Not recommended for children below 12 years unless specifically advised. Dose adjustment may be required in severe hepatic impairment. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Complete the prescribed course even if symptoms improve.
Side Effects
Generally well tolerated. Reported effects include: nausea, dyspepsia, epigastric discomfort, diarrhoea or mild altered taste; headache; rarely skin rash or hypersensitivity; rare mild transient rise in liver enzymes. The thiol group in Erdosteine is masked until hepatic activation, so direct gastric irritation is uncommon. Discontinue and consult physician if severe rash, angioedema, breathing difficulty or persistent GI symptoms occur.
Contraindications & Precautions
Known hypersensitivity to Erdosteine or any capsule excipient. Homocystinuria (Erdosteine contains a methionine moiety in its structure). Severe hepatic impairment or cirrhosis. Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 25 mL/min) — use with caution. Pregnancy and lactation — use only if the potential benefit clearly outweighs the risk and under specialist supervision, as safety data in pregnancy is limited. Children below 12 years — safety and efficacy not established. Concomitant use with cough suppressants (codeine, dextromethorphan) is not advisable as suppression of the cough reflex may lead to airway obstruction by liquefied secretions.

Safety in pregnancy, lactation and children below 12 years is not established. It should also not be taken with cough suppressants (codeine, dextromethorphan) as suppressing the cough after liquefying mucus can cause secretion pooling in the airways.
