About Trutol-G IV Infusion
Trutol-G IV Infusion is a dual osmotic-diuretic IV preparation containing Mannitol 10% and Glycerin 10%. It is used in intensive care, neurology and ophthalmology to rapidly reduce intracellular and intracranial fluid in conditions of raised pressure.
Mannitol increases plasma osmolality and pulls water across the blood-brain barrier; Glycerin contributes additional caloric value and osmotic effect with relatively less renal clearance — together they offer a smoother decongestive effect than mannitol alone.

Indications
- Raised intracranial pressure (head injury, stroke, brain tumour oedema)

Mechanism of Action
Mannitol is a hexitol freely filtered at the glomerulus but not reabsorbed. By raising plasma osmolality it draws water out of cells, particularly the brain across an intact blood-brain barrier — reducing ICP. Within the tubule it retains water osmotically and promotes diuresis. Glycerin contributes its own osmotic effect and adds glucose-based energy substrate metabolised by the liver.
