PTR PTS Calculator for Pharma (with GST)
Enter the MRP, pick the GST rate and formulation type, and the calculator gives the price to retailer (PTR), price to stockist (PTS), the margins at each level and – if you enter your net rate – your margin as a PCD franchise partner.
Figures are rounded to 2 decimals. Trade margins and GST rates vary by product – confirm the HSN rate and any DPCO ceiling before printing an MRP.
How PTR and PTS are calculated
Indian pharma pricing works backwards from the printed MRP, which includes GST. First the GST is removed, then the retailer margin, then the stockist margin:
| Step | Formula | Example (MRP ₹100, 5% GST, non-scheduled) |
|---|---|---|
| MRP excluding GST | MRP × 100 ÷ (100 + GST%) | 100 × 100 ÷ 105 = ₹95.24 |
| PTR (price to retailer) | MRP excl. GST × (1 − retailer margin %) | 95.24 × 0.80 = ₹76.19 |
| PTS (price to stockist) | PTR × (1 − stockist margin %) | 76.19 × 0.90 = ₹68.57 |
| Invoice values | PTR or PTS × (1 + GST%) | Retailer invoice ₹80.00; stockist invoice ₹72.00 |
For scheduled formulations (medicines with a DPCO ceiling price) the margins are fixed differently: the retailer margin is 16% calculated on PTR and the stockist margin 8% calculated on PTS, so PTR = MRP excl. GST ÷ 1.16 and PTS = PTR ÷ 1.08. Select "Scheduled" in the calculator to use these.

Where the PCD franchise partner fits
In a PCD pharma franchise the company sells to its partner at a net rate well below PTS. The partner then supplies stockists at PTS, or chemists directly at PTR, and spends part of the difference on doctor promotion. A worked example with net rate ₹200 on MRP ₹1,000 is in the PCD franchise cost guide; the Trumac app includes this calculator with our net rates filled in for every product in the product list.
Three things that change the numbers
- GST rate: most medicines are at 5%, but some nutraceuticals and cosmetic preparations are at 18% – the PTR for the same MRP is lower at 18%.
- Scheduled vs non-scheduled: price-controlled molecules carry the lower 16% / 8% margins and the MRP cannot exceed the NPPA ceiling.
- Schemes: bonus offers (10+1 and the like) effectively lower the PTS; calculate them on the scheme quantity, not the invoice quantity.

Frequently asked questions
What is PTR in pharma?
PTR is the price to retailer – the price at which a stockist or distributor bills the chemist, before GST. The retailer's margin is the difference between PTR and the MRP excluding GST.
What is PTS in pharma?
PTS is the price to stockist – the price at which the company or its PCD franchise partner bills the stockist, before GST. The stockist's margin is the difference between PTS and PTR.
What is the PTR formula?
PTR = MRP ÷ (1 + GST%) × (1 − retailer margin%). For a non-scheduled medicine with MRP ₹100 at 5% GST and 20% retailer margin: 100 ÷ 1.05 × 0.80 = ₹76.19.
What is the PTS formula?
PTS = PTR × (1 − stockist margin%). Continuing the example: ₹76.19 × 0.90 = ₹68.57. GST is then added on the invoice: ₹68.57 × 1.05 = ₹72.00.
What are the standard pharma trade margins in India?
For non-scheduled medicines the trade convention is 20% for the retailer and 10% for the stockist. For scheduled (price-controlled) formulations under DPCO the retailer margin is 16% on PTR and the stockist margin 8% on PTS.
How much GST applies to medicines?
Since the GST rate revision of September 2025 most medicines attract 5% GST, a list of notified lifesaving drugs is exempt, and some nutraceutical and cosmetic products attract 18%. Check the HSN code of each product.
How does a PCD franchise partner calculate margin?
The partner buys at the company's net rate and sells to stockists at PTS (or directly to chemists at PTR). Margin per unit = PTS − net rate. Enter your net rate in the calculator to see it; typical PCD net rates are 20–35% of MRP, leaving room for doctor promotion and expenses.
