About Bisafix-5 Tablet
Bisafix-5 Tablet contains Bisacodyl 5 mg in an enteric-coated format, a widely used stimulant laxative for short-term relief of constipation and for bowel preparation before colonoscopy, radiological investigations or abdominal surgery.
Bisacodyl works directly on the intestinal mucosa to stimulate peristalsis and water/electrolyte secretion. The enteric coating ensures the active drug is released in the small intestine and colon, not in the stomach — minimising gastric irritation and giving a predictable 6–8 hour onset of action ideal for overnight bedtime dosing.
Bisafix-5 is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing — a high-volume general-practice SKU.
Indications
- Short-term relief of constipation in adults and children > 6 years
- Bowel preparation before colonoscopy or abdominal imaging
- Pre-operative bowel cleansing
- Constipation in opioid-induced or post-surgical states (short-term)
Mechanism of Action
Bisacodyl is hydrolysed in the intestine to its active form (BHPM) which directly stimulates enteric nerves and the colonic mucosa, increasing peristaltic contractions and inhibiting water and electrolyte absorption. The result is softer stool, increased intestinal motility and evacuation within 6–8 hours.
Dosage & Administration
Adults and children > 10 years: 1–2 tablets (5–10 mg) at bedtime. Children 6–10 years: 1 tablet at bedtime. Swallow whole — do not crush, chew or take with milk/antacids (would destroy enteric coating).
Side Effects
Abdominal cramping, urgency, diarrhoea. With chronic use: electrolyte imbalance (hypokalaemia), dehydration, dependence, melanosis coli. Rare: hypersensitivity.
Contraindications & Precautions
Intestinal obstruction or perforation. Acute abdominal conditions (appendicitis, severe dehydration). Severe inflammatory bowel disease. Hypersensitivity. Children under 6 unless prescribed. Avoid long-term use (> 1 week) without medical advice.
Storage
Store below 30 °C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.
