Mechanism of Action
Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide (galactose + fructose) not absorbed in small intestine. Fermented by colonic bacteria to lactic and acetic acids — lowering colonic pH, drawing water into lumen (osmotic laxative), and trapping ammonia as non-absorbable ammonium ion (reduces blood ammonia in hepatic encephalopathy).
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 15–30 ml once or twice daily. Children: 5–15 ml. Hepatic encephalopathy: titrate to 2–3 soft stools/day.
