Mechanism of Action
Levofloxacin is the active L-isomer of ofloxacin — third-generation fluoroquinolone with enhanced gram-positive activity (Streptococcus pneumoniae). Excellent oral bioavailability (~99%) with once-daily dosing. Ornidazole adds anti-anaerobic/protozoal action.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 1 tablet twice daily x 3–5 days.
Side Effects
- GI upset, headache, dizziness, photosensitivity, tendon rupture, QT prolongation, dysglycaemia.
- Disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol.
Contraindications
- Children <18, pregnancy, history of FQ tendinopathy, prolonged QT.
- Avoid alcohol.
