About Bilastic-DP Syrup (Akums)
Bilastic-DP Syrup combines Dextromethorphan 10 mg with Bilastine 3.3 mg for the symptomatic treatment of non-productive (dry) cough associated with allergic rhinitis or upper respiratory tract irritation. The combination simultaneously suppresses cough and addresses the underlying allergic/irritative component.
Dextromethorphan is a centrally acting cough suppressant with no analgesic, sedative or addictive potential at therapeutic doses. Bilastine is the modern non-sedating second-generation antihistamine — particularly suited to paediatric formulations because of its excellent tolerability and minimal CNS penetration.

Mechanism of Action
Dextromethorphan is a sigma-1 agonist and NMDA antagonist that suppresses the cough reflex in the medullary cough centre, without analgesic or addictive effects at antitussive doses. Bilastine selectively blocks H1 receptors, reducing histamine-mediated mucosal swelling and itching that drive allergic cough.
Dosage & Administration
Children 6–12 years: 5 ml two to three times daily. Adults and adolescents: 10 ml two to three times daily. Shake well before use.
Side Effects
Mild drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth. Rare: hypersensitivity, hallucinations (very high DXM doses), serotonin syndrome (combined with serotonergic drugs).
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Concurrent MAOI use. Children under 6 years. Productive cough (suppressing cough may impair mucus clearance). Severe liver disease.
