About Bilastic Syrup
Bilastic Syrup contains Bilastine 2.5 mg per ml in a child-friendly paediatric format. Bilastine is among the newest second-generation H1 antihistamines — non-sedating, non-cardiotoxic, with minimal CNS penetration and no significant CYP450 metabolism (and hence no major drug-drug interactions).
It is used for allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial) and chronic spontaneous urticaria in children aged 4 years and above. Compared with older antihistamines like cetirizine and loratadine, Bilastine offers comparable efficacy with the lowest reported sedation rate in head-to-head trials — making it particularly suited to school-age children.
Bilastic Syrup is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing — a fast-growing paediatric SKU.
Indications
- Allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial) in children ≥ 4 years
- Chronic spontaneous urticaria in children ≥ 4 years
- Adjunct in atopic dermatitis with significant itch
Mechanism of Action
Bilastine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist with negligible affinity for other receptor classes. It has poor blood-brain barrier penetration and is not significantly metabolised by CYP450 enzymes, resulting in minimal sedation, no QT prolongation and few clinically relevant drug interactions.
Dosage & Administration
Children 4–11 years (20–40 kg): 4 ml once daily; ≥ 12 years: 8 ml once daily, preferably one hour before or two hours after food or fruit juice. Shake well before use.
Side Effects
Headache, somnolence (uncommon — among the lowest in class), dizziness, abdominal pain. Rare: hypersensitivity reactions.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to bilastine. Avoid concomitant grapefruit juice or fruit juices (reduce absorption). Caution in moderate-to-severe renal impairment.
Storage
Store below 30 °C in a dry place, protected from light. Shake well before use.
