Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin that binds penicillin-binding proteins, inhibiting peptidoglycan cross-linking and producing bacterial cell wall destabilisation. Compared with first-generation cephalosporins, cefuroxime has enhanced gram-negative activity (H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, E. coli) plus retained gram-positive coverage.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 250–500 mg twice daily for 7–10 days.
- Take with food for better absorption.

- Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, mild skin rash.
- Rare: pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, transient hepatic enzyme elevation.
