About Cefiza-100 Dry Syrup
Cefiza-100 Dry Syrup contains Cefixime 100 mg/5 ml in a dry-syrup format. Cefixime is a third-generation oral cephalosporin with broad-spectrum activity against gram-negative bacteria including Enterobacteriaceae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and Neisseria species. The dry-syrup format preserves stability of the active drug until reconstitution at dispensing — a common pharmacy practice that extends shelf life.
Cefixime is the most widely used third-generation oral cephalosporin in Indian practice for community-acquired infections. Its once or twice daily dosing, oral bioavailability and broad gram-negative coverage make it valuable for UTI, gonorrhoea, typhoid fever, ENT infections and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
Cefiza-100 Dry Syrup is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing — one of the highest-volume cephalosporin SKUs.
Indications
- Acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis (streptococcal)
- Acute otitis media
- Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
- Uncomplicated UTI and cystitis
- Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (single dose)
- Typhoid fever (uncomplicated)
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime binds penicillin-binding proteins (PBP-3) on gram-negative bacteria, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. The result is bacterial cell wall destabilisation and osmotic lysis. Cefixime is resistant to many beta-lactamases produced by gram-negative organisms — distinguishing it from earlier cephalosporins.
Dosage & Administration
Children: 8 mg/kg/day in one or two divided doses for 5–7 days. Reconstitute with the supplied water up to the marked line and shake well. Refrigerate after reconstitution.
Side Effects
Diarrhoea (relatively common), nausea, abdominal pain, mild skin rash. Less common: hypersensitivity reactions, transient elevation of liver enzymes. Rare: pseudomembranous colitis, severe skin reactions, anaphylaxis.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Severe penicillin allergy (cross-reactivity ~10%). Renal impairment requires dose adjustment. History of GI disease (caution).
